We participated in the European Testing Week in collaboration with the Cy Checkpoint, the CBVCT centre by AIDS Solidarity Movement – Cyprus. Individuals from diverse populations had the opportunity to get tested voluntarily for HIV and Syphilis in a safe and non-judgmental space. Community testing is #Anonymous, #Free and #Rapid. The upcoming testing days at Generation for Change CY will be announced soon.
As part of the European Testing Week, the Cy Checkpoint will be providing testing today, Tuesday, 29/11, from 17:00 to 20:00 at the AIDS Solidarity Movement space.
Συμμετείχαμε στην Ευρωπαϊκή Εβδομάδα Εξετάσεων σε συνεργασία με το Cy Checkpoint, το κέντρο CBVCT της Κίνησης Συμπαράστασης για το AIDS. Άτομα από διαφορετικές πληθυσμιακές ομάδες είχαν την ευκαιρία να εξεταστούν εθελοντικά για HIV και σύφιλη, σε έναν ασφαλή και μη επικριτικό χώρο. Η κοινοτική εξέταση είναι #ανώνυμη, #δωρεάν και #γρήγορη. Οι επερχόμενες ημέρες εξέτασης στο Generation for Change CY θα ανακοινωθούν σύντομα.

We would like to express our gratitude to Playtech Cyprus for their support and excellent collaboration. With their assistance, we provided support boxes with food and hygiene essentials through our humanitarian aid programme to 240 households living under challenging circumstances. We also organised our latest Intercultural 3×3 Basketball tournament and acquired the necessary equipment to provide employment-related activities to more than 130 job-seeking individuals from disadvantaged communities through our Employability Hub programme.

Θα θέλαμε να εκφράσουμε την ευγνωμοσύνη μας στην Playtech Cyprus για την υποστήριξη και την άριστη συνεργασία. Με τη βοήθειά τους, παρείχαμε πακέτα υποστήριξης με τρόφιμα και είδη υγιεινής μέσω του προγράμματος ανθρωπιστικής βοήθειας μας σε 240 νοικοκυριά που ζουν κάτω από δύσκολες συνθήκες. Διοργανώσαμε επίσης το τελευταίο μας διαπολιτισμικό τουρνουά μπάσκετ 3×3 και αποκτήσαμε απαραίτητο εξοπλισμό για την παροχή δραστηριοτήτων που σχετίζονται με την απασχόληση σε περισσότερα από 130 άτομα που αναζητούν εργασία από μειονεκτούσες κοινότητες μέσω του προγράμματος Employability Hub.
Informative Sessions on Human Rights and Asylum to Middle and and High School Students
Generation for Change CY provided interactive informative sessions on Human Rights and Asylum to the students of the GC School of Careers: Current Affairs Club and the Senior School: Critical Thinking Club.

Εκφράζουμε την εκτίμησή μας στους καθηγητές που μας προσκάλεσαν και στους μαθητές που έδειξαν τόσο μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον και συμμετοχή σε τόσο σημαντικά θέματα.
We participated in the Mind the Gap Migration and HIV Summit organised by the Africa Advocacy Foundation. The 2-day summit in Brussels covered vital challenges and gaps in HIV for migrants and refugees, and efforts advocating for a broader approach to inclusion and health equity regardless of ethnicity or origin. It also addressed root causes such as the issues with immigration status, poverty and racism. Participating were migrant-led and community grassroots organisations, academic researchers, policymakers and commissioners from WHO, UNAIDS, and more. Etinosa Erevbenagie-Johnbull represented Generation for Change CY; also acting as a member of the Steering Committee of the Mi-Health project, promoting an inclusive and empowered European community of frontline organisations and services working with migrants and refugees by building capacity, influencing policy, collaborating and sharing the best practices and expertise. Our warm thanks to the Africa Advocacy Foundation for putting such an important initiative together (the first of its kind) and including us.

Συμμετείχαμε στη διάσκεψη κορυφής Mind the Gap Migration and HIV που διοργάνωσε το Africa Advocacy Foundation. Η διήμερη σύνοδος κορυφής στις Βρυξέλλες κάλυψε ζωτικές προκλήσεις και κενά στον τομέα του HIV για τους μετανάστες και τους πρόσφυγες, καθώς και προσπάθειες που προάγουν μια ευρύτερη προσέγγιση για την ένταξη και την ισοτιμία στον τομέα της υγείας, ανεξάρτητα από την εθνικότητα ή την καταγωγή. Εξετάστηκαν επίσης τα βαθύτερα αίτια, όπως τα ζητήματα που σχετίζονται με το μεταναστευτικό καθεστώς, τη φτώχεια και τον ρατσισμό. Συμμετείχαν οργανώσεις μεταναστών και κοινοτικές οργανώσεις βάσης, ακαδημαϊκοί ερευνητές, υπεύθυνοι χάραξης πολιτικής και επίτροποι του ΠΟΥ, του UNAIDS και άλλοι. O Etinosa Erevbenagie-Johnbull εκπροσώπησε το Generation for Change CY- ενεργώντας επίσης ως μέλος της συντονιστικής επιτροπής του έργου Mi-Health, προωθώντας μια χωρίς αποκλεισμούς και με δυνατότητες ευρωπαϊκή κοινότητα οργανώσεων και υπηρεσιών πρώτης γραμμής που εργάζονται με μετανάστες και πρόσφυγες, με την ανάπτυξη ικανοτήτων, την άσκηση επιρροής στην πολιτική, τη συνεργασία και την ανταλλαγή βέλτιστων πρακτικών και εμπειρογνωμοσύνης. Amazing Turnout at the
Let's Play Together - Intercultural 3x3 Basketball Tournament 2022
We are still buzzing from the intercultural 3×3 basketball tournament we hosted last Saturday, November 12th, 2022, in Kaimakli!
Seeing people from different backgrounds and walks of life coming together and playing against each other – with respect and sportsmanlike behaviour – was incredible! In a record turnout as far as sports events are concerned, more than 150 men and women from more than 21 countries competed and came to support the event. We felt so happy witnessing the fact that there are people in our community promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion; everything that Generation for Change CY stands for and strives to advance in Cyprus. Stay tuned for the next intercultural sport events “Cyprus Got Game”
Είμαστε ακόμα ενθουσιασμένοι από το διαπολιτισμικό τουρνουά μπάσκετ 3×3 που διοργανώσαμε το περασμένο Σάββατο 12 Νοεμβρίου 2022 στο Καϊμακλί!
Βλέποντας ανθρώπους από διαφορετικά υπόβαθρα και κοινωνικά στρώματα να έρχονται μαζί και να παίζουν ο ένας εναντίον του άλλου – με σεβασμό και αθλητική συμπεριφορά – ήταν απίστευτο! Σε ένα ρεκόρ συμμετοχής όσον αφορά τις αθλητικές εκδηλώσεις, περισσότεροι από 150 άνδρες και γυναίκες από περισσότερες από 21 χώρες αγωνίστηκαν και ήρθαν να υποστηρίξουν την εκδήλωση. Αισθανθήκαμε τόσο χαρούμενοι βλέποντας το γεγονός ότι υπάρχουν άνθρωποι στην κοινότητά μας που προωθούν τη διαφορετικότητα, την ισοτιμία και την συμπερίληψη- όλα όσα πρεσβεύει και προσπαθεί να προωθήσει το Generation for Change CY στην Κύπρο.

Generation for Change CY is organising a two-day Sexual Health Event on 21 and 22 of November.
The first day of the event (21/11 at 18:00 – 19:30) will be a workshop to educate people about consent, sexual health, and how to access support and live without stigma in the case of a diagnosis. The session will be a round table discussion where participants will be encouraged to voice their concerns in a safe and non-judgmental space, where relevant topics will be discussed, and people will be able to share their own personal experiences as well.
The second day of the event (22/11 from 17:00 – 20:00) will be free, with anonymous rapid testing for HIV and Syphilis in collaboration with the CY Checkpoint. Bookings in advance are required.

Génération pour le changement CY organise un événement de deux jours sur la santé sexuelle les 21 et 22 novembre.
Le premier jour de l’événement (21/11 à 18:00 – 19: 30) sera un atelier pour éduquer les gens sur le consentement, la santé sexuelle et comment accéder au soutien et vivre sans stigmatisation en cas de diagnostic. La session sera une table ronde où les participants seront encouragés à exprimer leurs préoccupations dans un espace sûr et sans jugement, où des sujets pertinents seront discutés et où les gens pourront également partager leurs propres expériences personnelles.
Le deuxième jour de l’événement (22/11 de 17h00 à 20h00) sera gratuit, avec un dépistage rapide anonyme du VIH et de la syphilis en collaboration avec le point de contrôle CY. Les réservations à l’avance sont obligatoires.

HIV Should Not be Used
as a Tool to Cultivate Fear and Racism
Nicosia, November 4, 2022
In relation to the public statements made by the Minister of Interior, Mr. Nikos Nouris, during the CyBC TV programme “First Update” on Thursday, November 2nd, 2022, we wish to emphasise the following:
The statistics given publicly by the Minister and are allegedly referring specifically to applicants for international protection residing at the “Pournara” First Reception Centre, are completely inaccurate. According to the Republic of Cyprus statistics published by the ECDC suggest that the total number of people living with HIV does not exceed 1100, which includes both Cypriots and non-Cypriots, and refers to everyone currently being treated at the State HIV Reference Clinic (Gregorios Clinic) in Cyprus. For the last two years, the total number of new diagnoses of the whole population has been in about 150 to 170 per year.
During the pre-mentioned TV programme, an association was made to link people applying for international protection to infectious diseases, using the phrase “it is known from health checks that (…) these people carry some communicable diseases”, portraying asylum seekers as the carriers and spreaders of diseases, and thus are dangerous to public health. The Minister also said “(…) these are diseases that are really foreign to us, because they simply do not thrive in our own population”, a rhetoric that can only be described as unacceptable, as it perpetuates and contributes to the increase of xenophobia and racism, while it stigmatises groups of people who are already in a position of vulnerability, as well as people with chronic patients.
Specifically for HIV, we have known for more than 30 years that HIV cannot be transmitted through social contact, cohabitation, hugging, kissing or saliva, sharing household appliances – toilet – pool – bath, etc. Today we know beyond any doubt that people living with HIV with an undetectable viral load CANNOT transmit the virus through sexual intercourse, even without the use of condoms or PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis). The above makes any discrimination based on HIV status completely unfounded.
We understand that the work carried out by the Ministry of Interior, as well as by all agencies and individuals involved in the asylum process, is quite challenging. However, it is vital for all to take under serious consideration the vulnerability and value of every human life so that any actions taken will not contribute to further stigmatisation and re-traumatisation of people. The fact that the Minister’s statements were automatically and immediately reproduced by all the media, highlights an issue that should concern the media, as they play an essential role in the cultivation, perpetuation and maintenance of racism and xenophobia.
We believe that HIV infection cannot and should not be used as a tool to cultivate fear and racism. We call on the Honourable Minister to apologise immediately and publicly for his statements, and for the serious adverse impact they have caused.

Σε σχέση με τις δηλώσεις του Υπουργού Εσωτερικών, κ. Νίκου Νουρή, στην εκπομπή του ΡΙΚ “Πρώτη Ενημέρωση”, την Πέμπτη 2 Νοεμβρίου, 2022, επιθυμούμε να τονίσουμε τα εξής:
Οι αριθμοί που δημοσιοποιήθηκαν από τον κύριο Υπουργό και φέρονταν να αφορούν συγκεκριμένα σε αιτούντες για διεθνή προστασία που διαμένουν στο Κέντρο Προσωρινής Φιλοξενίας “Πουρνάρα” είναι εντελώς λανθασμένοι. Σύμφωνα με τα στατιστικά στοιχεία της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας που δημοσιοποιούνται μέσω του ECDC, το σύνολο των ανθρώπων που ζουν με HIV, Κυπρίων και μη-Κυπρίων, που παρακολουθούνται στη Γρηγόρειο Κλινική σήμερα, δεν υπερβαίνει τους 1100. Κατά την τελευταία δε διετία, οι νέες συνολικές διαγνώσεις για όλο τον πληθυσμό της χώρας κυμαίνονται περίπου μεταξύ 150 και 170 για κάθε έτος.
Στην εν λόγω εκπομπή έγινε συσχέτιση των ανθρώπων που αιτούνται για διεθνή προστασία με μολυσματικές ασθένειες, με τη φράση “είναι γνωστό από υγειονομικούς ελέγχους ότι (…) κουβαλούν μαζί τους κάποιες μεταδοτικές ασθένειες”. Η ρητορική αυτή παρουσίασε τους ανθρώπους αυτούς ως κουβαλητές ασθενειών που είναι επικίνδυνοι για τη δημόσια υγεία, με τον κ. Υπουργό να αναφέρει “(…) αυτές είναι ασθένειες πραγματικά οι οποίες είναι ξένες προς εμάς, γιατί πολύ απλά δεν ευδοκιμούν στο δικό μας πληθυσμό”. Η ρητορική αυτή μόνο ως απαράδεκτη μπορεί να χαρακτηριστεί αφού συντηρεί και συμβάλλει στη διαιώνιση της ξενοφοβίας και του ρατσισμού, ενώ παράλληλα στιγματίζει ομάδες ανθρώπων που βρίσκονται ήδη σε θέση ευαλωτότητας, όπως επίσης και ανθρώπους με χρόνιες ασθένειες.
Ειδικά για τον HIV, για περισσότερα από 30 χρόνια γνωρίζουμε ότι ο HIV δεν μπορεί να μεταδοθεί με την κοινωνική επαφή, τη συγκατοίκηση, την αγκαλιά, το φιλί ή το σάλιο, την κοινή χρήση οικιακών συσκευών – τουαλέτας – πισίνας – μπάνιου κ.λπ.. Σήμερα γνωρίζουμε πέραν πάσης αμφιβολίας ότι οι άνθρωποι που ζουν με HIV και έχουν μη-ανιχνεύσιμο φορτίο ΔΕΝ μπορούν να μεταδώσεις τον ιό ούτε με σεξουαλική επαφή, ακόμα και χωρίς τη χρήση προφυλακτικού ή της PrEP (Προφυλακτική αγωγή πριν την έκθεση στον HIV).Τα ανωτέρω καθιστούν την όποια διάκριση με βάση το HIV Status εντελώς αβάσιμη.
Κατανοούμε ότι το έργο που επιτελείται από το Υπουργείο Εσωτερικών, όπως και από όλους τους φορείς, αλλά και άτομα που σχετίζονται με τη διαδικασία ασύλου, αποτελεί μια πρόκληση. Είναι όμως ζωτικής σημασίας για όλους να λαμβάνουν πολύ σοβαρά υπόψη τους την ευαλωτότητα αλλά και την αξία της κάθε ανθρώπινης ζωής, έτσι ώστε να μην προβαίνουν σε ενέργειες που συμβάλουν σε περαιτέρω στιγματισμό των ανθρώπων και επανατραυματοποίηση τους. Το γεγονός ότι οι δηλώσεις του κ. Υπουργού έτυχαν αυτόματης και άμεσης αναπαραγωγής από όλα τα Μέσα Μαζικής Ενημέρωσης, αναδεικνύει ένα πρόβλημα το οποίο θα πρέπει να προβληματίσει τα ΜΜΕ μιας και διαδραματίζουν ουσιαστικό ρόλο στη καλλιέργεια, διαιώνιση και συντήρηση του ρατσισμού και της ξενοφοβίας.
Θεωρούμε ότι η HIV λοίμωξης δεν μπορεί να χρησιμοποιείται ως εργαλείο για τη καλλιέργεια του φόβου και του ρατσισμού. Καλούμε τον έντιμο κ. Υπουργό όπως απολογηθεί άμεσα και δημόσια για τις δηλώσεις του και για το σοβαρό δυσμενή αντίκτυπο που αυτές έχουν προκαλέσει.
