Charity Basketball Game: Hope Team Vs Digenis Akritas Morphou

On Tuesday 7th December 2021, Generation for Change CY organized a friendly Basketball game in Nicosia.
During this exciting game, Hope Team, consisting of 15 refugees and migrants and 3 coaches, was given the opportunity to test their skills against Digenis Akrita Morphou, who is leading the standings in Cyprus second division.
The aim of this event was to promote the respect and value of diversity through sports, as well as equity and multicultural representation in Cypriot sports and society more widely.
While enjoying the game, our 120 attendees also enjoyed participating in our halftime sports activities, music and entertainment from DJ Femzy and host Yotan, as well as getting their photos taken with our GFC CY placard! We also hosted a raffle, where the winners received a portrait sketch by artist @Tobi_ra.art.
We felt a great sense of joy in bringing people from different communities together – all with different cultures, stories, upbringing – united by the same cause. We believe that sport can be a great vehicle for building and integrating relationships amongst different communities, and this event was a beautiful example of that!
We realize the impact creating an environment that fosters inclusion can have on marginalized people – the feeling of being seen, a boost in self-esteem, among others – and as such we are planning on more such events in the future. In fact, we are planning to organise a multicultural basketball tournament spanning across Cyprus.
We would like to express our thanks to everyone who contributed to making this event happen Digenis Akrita Morphou, Global Educational Services, Froutaria Piotitas ZITTI, Avant Garde Cyprus, Super FM, and to all of our attendees for creating such a wonderful energy during the game! We look forward to more of these events in the near future.
