Countering Hate and Disinformation: Educators United for Migrant Inclusion
“What is most disturbing is how normalized hate speech has become. When bodies wash ashore after a shipwreck, as happened in Cyprus just last month, where seven people died and twelve more went missing, we do not just see tragedy. We also hear calls for more deaths, more borders, and more deportations, often disguised as ‘voluntary returns.’” Highlighting the urgent need to address the dehumanization of migrants and the role of disinformation in shaping public opinion.
This statement was part of the opening address delivered by our Managing Director, Etinosa Erevbenagie-Johnbull, at the “Countering Mis/Disinformation and Hate Speech in Cypriot Schools: Peace Education Tools for Educational Leaders” conference organized by the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR).
Furthermore, we had the pleasure of leading the interactive workshop “Destination Europe,” where educators from across the divide participated in role-play activities exploring the complex realities of migration and integration in Europe. The workshop offered a meaningful space for reflection on the impact of policy decisions and the importance of fostering informed, inclusive dialogue on migrant integration and inclusion, especially within educational environments.
We are grateful to AHDR for the invitation, to the speakers and presenters for their insightful contributions on combating hate speech and disinformation, and to all the participants who attended and actively engaged in our workshop.
