The Impact of Labor Market Restrictions on Asylum Seekers in Cyprus
Generation for Change CY is pleased to release FAIR: The Impact of Labor Market Restrictions on Asylum Seekers in Cyprus, a mixed-methods study examining how current employment policies affect people seeking protection on the island.
Drawing on 200 surveys and 20 in-depth interviews, the report documents the material and psychological consequences of the nine-month work ban and sectoral restrictions. Findings show widespread difficulty meeting basic needs, increased risk of exploitation, and significant emotional strain caused by prolonged uncertainty and forced idleness. The research also highlights major gaps in access to information, challenges in navigating state procedures, and limited availability of integration pathways such as language and vocational training.
Alongside these insights, the report presents evidence-based recommendations aimed at improving rights protection, expanding access to safe employment, and supporting a more coherent and humane integration framework in Cyprus.
