Have you ever considered how to make children feel valued in a diverse community? What factors contribute to raising anti-racist children? What influences their views and attitudes about Muslims, black people, refugees – asylum seekers, and other minorities in Cyprus?

In October 2023, the #MakeRacismHistory Festival by the European Network Against Racism (ENAR) featured a two-day event on #RepresentationMatters! This event was co-hosted by Generation for Change CY. The first evening began with Clinical Psychologist Maria Kouyoumdjian sharing insights on the impact of the representation of racialized people in children’s literature, media, and toys. This was followed by an open mic session where young people from racialized communities (e.g., Muslims, blacks, Middle Eastern, and refugees) expressed their experiences and feelings about representation and diversity – or the lack thereof – during their upbringing. The evening concluded with an open discussion.

The second evening involved a screening of the movie Selma (2014) by Ava Duvernay. The following discussion delved into representation in the creative sector, mainly writing and directing in the movie industry. Various aspects of representation, including societal, political, and professional settings, were addressed. The event eventually circled back to its central theme: representation and diversity in children’s literature, media, and toys.

In addition, a brochure was published and disseminated, presenting the powerful impact that the representation of racialized people in children’s literature, media, and toys can have on both children of racialized and non-racialized communities. It features recommendations on representative content and starting points of action for parents, educators, and other adults working with children.
