Turning Principles into Action: Using the EU Charter to Combat Discrimination in Cyprus
This year marked the 25th anniversary of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, an important moment to reflect not only on its promises, but also on the gaps between principles and practice.
To mark this occasion, Symfiliosi and Generation for Change CY organized a seminar titled “The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights in the Cypriot Legal System: Scrutinising Laws, Policies and Practices in Employment, Welfare, Housing, Health and Education.”
During the event, NGO professionals and activists came together to learn and explore how the Charter can be used as a practical tool to combat racial discrimination across the workplace, healthcare, education, welfare, and housing, to address racial hate crime and hate speech while strengthen access to justice, and to assess national laws, policies, and practices in terms of their compliance with the Charter.
The seminar provided a space for meaningful exchange, critical reflection, and strategic discussion on how the Charter can be used to safeguard rights and promote justice in Cyprus, and how civil society can come to stand up for human rights.
The seminar took place under the framework of the FAIR project co-funded by the EU through the CHAR-LITI program.
